Summary- Lenina, one of the protagonists of the story, is entering the Alpha changing rooms at the beginning of chapter 4. She is shown to be popular with the alphas even though she is a beta. She has slept with almost all of the alphas in the room. This multiple dates and partners is not uncommon in the society that Huxley is writing about. She pulls Bernard, the small and insecure alpha, out of the crowd to talk to him in public about their "date", a trip to the savage reservations in New Mexico. Bernard, another protagonist, is embarrassed by this public outburst. Lenina then announces to Bernard that she must go and fly with her pilot boyfriend, Henry. She then spends the day playing obstacle golf with him. Bernard shares his insecurities to the reader in part 2 of chapter 4. He states that he is about as big as the average Gamma. This limited his power because the lower caste seem to associate caste with size. This birth defect makes Bernard insecure and his insecurity brings forth his odd actions. The reader is introduced to Bernard's friend named Helmholtz Watson, an alpha plus, who also has a problem. He is way to smart. This makes him unsatisfied with his job which goes against everything the society believes in. As Lenina spends the day in a helicopter with Henry, she says things that are part of her conditioning. Henry explains how the society works to her when she states that she is glad that she is not a Gamma. Society is full of preconditioned people who like their own caste through brainwashing. This allows society to run without any unhappy people with a few exceptions, such as Bernard. It is then shown in the next scene that society has Solidarity rituals where people let go of their feelings through rituals and singing. This is what remains of the human nature that is not removable through hypnopaedia. Bernard takes Lenina to the ocean side the next day. Bernard tells her how he feels about society. He feels that the people of this Utopian society are slaves of conditioning at birth. Lenina is horrified at what Bernard is saying and she convinces Bernard to take some soma. Soma is a fictional drug that makes the user super happy. It seems to be used all over society by everybody. The next day Bernard asks for a pass to get into the Savage Reservations. Bernard is one of the few who have acess to these areas due to his job as an Alpha Plus Physiologist. The director threatens to send Bernard to a camp in Iceland because of his anti social behavior that threatens the society. Lenina and Bernard later arrive at Santa Fe and spend the night in a hotel. They arrive at the reservation the next day. It is revealed by the warden of the reservation that the native savages live differently than people of the world state. Here, people are born, and have families. This fact interests Lenina. The 60,000 natives speak extinct languages and have religions. The savages are kept in by wires that destroy whatever is touching it. The chapter ends as Bernard is being dropped off by a pilot at a resting pueblo before he continues his journey through the reservations.
Quote-"Five hundred repetitions once a week from thirteen to seventeen"(Huxley 98).
Reaction- There seems to be a very unique writing style present in each chapter. Each chapter is split into different parts which I believe show a shift in the focus on a character. The protagonist switch around. The quote above shows that Bernard is different from anybody else from society. He says a phrase like that after Lenina says a hypnopaedia phrase. This shows that Bernard knows that the people of society are being controlled by the Ford, the government. It also shows the extent in which the brainwashing has on a member of society. They constantly repeat phrases that they have been brainwashed to know and use them to justify actions and their views on life. The society is created exactly how the quote says it is. The morals are taught to children from different castes multiple times daily from a certain age to another age.

Ford? Henry? Interesting how the savages/natives are the ones with languages and religion
